Government aims to rent out nation's spare rooms |
02 2008 |
| Thousands more rooms could be made available under a new government initiative aimed at meeting the booming demand for rental accommodation. With landlords across the country currently reporting that demand for rental property is far outstripping supply particularly in popular places such as Manchester and Brighton the Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship is to carry out an audit into the nation's spare rooms. Once the number of spare rooms has been calculated, homeowners are then going to be given an incentive to rent them out to tenants. The government department stated: "Providing affordable renting housing in the face of a rising population and the time it takes to build new developments has made the measure necessary." To support the initiative, a new £3 million computer programme will be developed so as to produce an accurate database containing information on spare rooms and prospective landlords. It is expected that those homeowners who sign up to the scheme and take in tenants will be granted tax breaks by the government. ![]() |
