Classy London dining scene still offers 'great value'

While London may have been named as officially the most expensive place in the world to dine out, even culinary experts admit there are still great eating-out bargains to be found throughout the city.

In the latest survey of world restaurants carried out by the prestigious Zagat guides, the capital pipped Paris and Tokyo to the title of costliest dinner out, with an average three-course meal including a drink now standing at a shade under £40.

Such high prices, which represent a 2.5 per cent increase on last year's average, have been driven largely by the growing number of high-quality restaurants being opened across the city, including those owned by celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay.

Tim Zagat, of Zagat guides, said: "It's astonishing to see how expensive the London dining scene has become but as indicated by this survey, the city still offers many great values - both in terms of quality and price."

Indeed, for the savvy diner, London also offers a host of dining experiences which needn't break the bank, with stiff competition in areas such as Brick Lane and China Town in the West End working to the advantage of the customer.
