Campaign launched for South London's alternative shops |
24 2007 |
| A campaign has been launched to save an iconic parade of shops in south London. Situated close to Deptford Town Hall in the suburb of New Cross, New Cross Road has long been a favourite of students for its selection of shops selling alternative clothing, art and music. Café Crema has also become an institution among students at the nearby Goldsmiths College, University of London and is packed most mornings as young people recover from the night before. While many areas of London are famous for their alternative shops and bars, not least Camden and Notting Hill, south of the River Thames boasts more affordable rents, while proximity to a university or college is often a major factor for the thousands of students heading to the city each year. The lease for Café Crema is due to expire at the end of March, with Goldsmiths College, which owns the parade of shops, yet to offer an extension or any new terms, meaning those renting flats in the area will be forced to find an alternative spot for an afternoon coffee or Sunday morning hangover cure. ![]() |
