Brighton rental demand set to rise as supply is stunted |

| The already strong competition for rental accommodation in Brighton looks set to be heightened after local council bosses have decided not to give the go-ahead to plans for 15,000 new homes to be built nearby. Neighbouring Mid Sussex District Council had put forward proposals for the new homes as a means of easing high demand in the region. However, East Sussex council bosses have ruled that such a scheme would place an unbearable level of extra pressure on the region's roads and could even see some jobs leaving Brighton. However, Mid Sussex chiefs have called such claims "ludicrous". Now the plans will be subjected to an eight-week consultation which will decide on a new strategy for increasing the housing supply in this area of the south-east. With growing numbers of professionals and students heading to Brighton, many are opting to rent outside of the city centre or even in one of the neighbouring towns and villages and commute in for work, recent studies suggest. ![]() |
