'BARBies' stick to renting in the UK

Growing numbers of UK professionals are choosing to stay in the rental property sector at home while purchasing overseas.

Recent research carried out by National Savings & Investments found that89 per cent of 18 to 24-year olds believe buying abroad is a more realistic option than buying a property in the UK, while 36 per cent of those renting in London are considering looking overseas for their first property purchase.

In addition, Barclays has found that this new breed of 'BARBies' - Buying Abroad Renting in Britain - is set to carry on expanding,, with the amount of enquiries about overseas property handled by the bank in 2007 standing at 18,000, more than double the 2006 figure.

In an interview with the Western Mail, Welsh boxer Joe Calzaghe revealed that he is one of the BARBies, having invested in property in Egypt and Turkey while renting in the UK.ADNFCR-1219-ID-18464037-ADNFCR
